EQUAL is a Community Initiative designed to help a range of target groups with a particular focus on equality issues associated with gender, disability, race or ethnic origin, religion or belief, age, and sexual orientation. The initiative also supports the social and vocational integration of asylum seekers/refugees. EQUAL is being taken forward as a programme at a GB level, led by the Department for Work and Pensions. The GB EQUAL Community Initiative Programme document was developed by the DfWP, in consultation with the Scottish Government and the National Assembly for Wales. The Objective 3 Programme Management Executive, which also administers the lowland Scotland Objective 3 Programme provides the Scottish specific support structure for the EQUAL programme. The Support Unit is responsible for providing support to the Scottish Management Committee; providing advice to Development Partnerships; publicising the programme; and monitoring and advising on DP activity.
