Sustainable Development
Objectives
- To raise awareness and promote sustainability within the workplace and
encourage sustainability in terms of employment creation.
- To assist existing forms of learning and skills development to integrate
sustainable development and encourage sustainability in the development
of new learning activities.
- To raise awareness of the benefits arising from sustainable development to
the Scottish economy to all beneficiaries via the promotion of best
practice, training, information and guidance.
- To ensure that sustainable development is integrated throughout the
delivery and management of Programme activities.
Examples of how projects have addressed this theme
include:
- recycling and reusing goods through the donation of furniture and
equipment
- improving the physical environment through urban landscaping
- providing training on environmental issues
- promoting social inclusion by offering free computer access to community
groups

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and Scottish Natural Heritage
have recently published the report “Structural Funds Linking Sustainable Development to Regional Development – Learning
Lessons from Scotland’s European Structural Funds
Experience”
This report is a useful
guidance tool and offers a wealth of case studies and good practice in regards
to the mainstreaming of Sustainable Development within Scotland’s European
Structural Fund Programmes
